Quest Diagnostics Inc., a leading provider of medical testing services to physicians, was the biggest recipient of Medicare reimbursements in Illinois in 2012, totaling nearly $34 million, according to data released Tuesday by the Obama administration. The company, based in New Jersey, has fended off major fraud claims in recent years.

A Quest spokeswoman said the company is still reviewing the Medicare data but affirms “our billing is appropriate.” The large reimbursement sum is due to the organization's numerous customers in the state and not to any wrongdoing, she said.

Last year Quest said it paid $241 million to settle a complaint that it defrauded California’s Medicaid system. In 2009 it paid $302 million as part of a global settlement to resolve claims it sold faulty diagnostic test kits, according to a Justice Department press release.

The company has been the subject of a number of state and federal investigations for fraud dating back to the 1990s and is still a defendant in a Virginia whistleblower lawsuit.

Its shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Quest had revenues of $7.1 billion in 2013. It has Chicago offices in the Loop and in the Streeterville, Lakeview and Sauganash neighborhoods.
