Prototype of the Lunar Greenhouse at the BIO International Convention in Chicago.

The Lunar Greenhouse model on display at a Chicago expo this week may be the solution to gardening in space. Even after 12 years, Dr. Gene Giacomelli, director of the Controlled Environment Agriculture Center (CEAC), and his team are working on improvements to furhter automate the greenhouse, where hydroponics provide the plants with water and nutrients. Incorporating a bioregenerative process, scientists and engineers are researching how to grow sustainable food crops in outer space with sustainable greenhouses. This prototype at the Bio International Convention at McCormick Place returns to Arizona today. The CEAC is part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at The University of Arizona.
